Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary – what is the difference?

There are multitudes of carpet designs and colours,  how can you differentiate between a traditional, transitional or contemporary carpet?

Traditional carpets are based on classic designs, and are very ornate in pattern and colour. Inspired by rug making that dates back thousands of years, with an all over pattern, a central medallion or compartment design layout, these are often referred to as Oriental, Persian or Classic rugs.

Transitional carpets are often the merging of traditional and contemporary style. Inspired by traditional motif, a transitional carpet is executed using repetition, mixed colour and various yarn types, as is often seen in contemporary designs.

Contemporary carpets are modern, with a variety of finishes, mixed pile heights, bold colour choices and new design elements. They are often novelty items, bridging boundaries in design and turning a floor covering into a work of art.
